Nestled within the lush Tropical Spice Garden in Penang, K(an)opi Coffee isn’t your typical café. Founded by Jonathan, a Penangite photojournalist with a deep love for stories, nature, and coffee, this hidden seafront café is a soulful escape from city life. Inspired during the stillness of the pandemic in late 2020, K(an)opi began as a weekend venture and has since evolved into a full-fledged sanctuary for coffee lovers, foodies, and cycling enthusiasts alike.

The name K(an)opi is a playful nod to “canopy,” reflecting the café’s placement under a green cover of trees, where freshly brewed coffee, homemade bakes, and quiet conversations are shared among the rustle of leaves and the sound of ocean waves.

The Story Behind K(an)opi

Jonathan didn’t start out in the F&B industry—his roots lie in journalism and international studies. When he’s not brewing coffee or managing the café, he’s telling visual stories through his creative studio. But K(an)opi was born from more than just career shifts; it was a response to the stillness and reflection brought on by the pandemic. Jonathan envisioned a place that would refresh the mind and bring people closer to nature—a calming oasis brewed with intention.

His journey into the coffee scene was also shaped by friendships and shared passions. His cycling group, including co-founders Daeng and Ming (both coffee professionals), as well as Kenny, owner of Tropical Spice Garden and his cycling mentor, played key roles in K(an)opi’s inception. What began as a weekend project has grown into something deeper—a tribute to connection, community, and craft.

A Menu Rooted in Collaboration & Creativity

At K(an)opi, the offerings go far beyond your average coffee fare. While expertly brewed coffee remains at the heart of their menu—thanks to barista and business partner Vishnu, who brings nearly two decades of experience—they’ve expanded to offer all-day breakfasts, homemade pies, scones, and even small-batch gelato. One standout is their Masala Chai gelato, uniquely crafted using a custom spice blend from the Garden itself.

Collaboration is a key ingredient in K(an)opi’s culinary journey. For months, they partnered with friends and home bakers, curating a rotating selection of goods they genuinely loved. In March 2024, they teamed up with Chef Off Duty to launch a kitchen collaboration, bringing warm meals and fresh bakes to the garden café. This approach ensures that every dish comes not only with quality ingredients, but with a story.

An Oceanfront Retreat for Coffee, Community & Calm

Tucked into a quiet pocket of the Tropical Spice Garden, K(an)opi isn’t just a café—it’s a destination. The location was once a back entrance used by gardeners, but Jonathan saw potential in the untouched space. Situated along a popular cycling route, the café quickly became a rest stop and meeting point for Penang’s tight-knit cycling community and nature lovers.

Though it’s 30 to 40 minutes from George Town, K(an)opi embraces the distance as part of its charm. With views of the ocean, a forested backdrop, and a pet- and cyclist-friendly vibe, it’s an ideal place to unplug. Jonathan and Vishnu pour their hearts into every cup and every experience, creating not just a café, but a refuge where people can slow down and savour the moment. As Jonathan puts it: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. So do it with all your heart.”
