The outer scuba layer provided just the right stretch, while added grip points ensured security during pivots and leaps.

Initially meant for her daughters alone, the shoes quickly drew attention from their teammates and coaches. Orders began rolling in, and word of mouth turned the household project into a small-scale brand. Coaches and athletes alike appreciated the durability and comfort—particularly the skin-toned design that blended seamlessly with the competition mat and met aesthetic standards for judges.

By 2022, Tonya Twins was handling bulk orders and had begun international distribution. Demand eventually led the brand to transition from hand-stitched shoes to mass production, without compromising the core design values that made the shoes a hit. Their flagship product, Toniflex, is now available in six child-sized measurements and retails from RM50—a price point that, while slightly higher than average, reflects the durability and professional-grade quality.

A Growing Brand with a Bigger Vision

Though Tonya Twins began with footwear, the brand’s journey is far from over. Madam Tonya has plans to expand into related gymnastics gear, including leotards and tights. She’s also opening up design collaborations with coaches and organising small competitions to showcase the brand and support local talent.

More than just a business venture, Tonya Twins is rooted in a mission to make rhythmic gymnastics more accessible to Malaysian children. Madam Tonya especially hopes to encourage kids as young as three to explore the sport—an age she believes is ideal due to the flexibility of the body and the natural curiosity of young minds.

From local gymnasiums to international arenas—especially in countries like Russia where rhythmic gymnastics has a major following—Tonya Twins is proving that meaningful innovation doesn’t require massive capital or global headquarters. Sometimes, all it takes is a mother’s love, a sewing machine, and the courage to create something better.
